Behnaz Tilavi - Project Lead

After years of finding myself caught in a cycle of unhealthy and abusive relationships, destructive behaviours and poor decisions, I reached a turning point when I was sentenced to five years in prison. For the first time in my life, I had the space to stop running from myself. I was forced to take accountability for my actions, reflect on the choices that had brought me there, and begin healing from experiences I had never properly dealt with. What initially felt like the end of my life became the beginning of a journey of growth, self awareness and hope.

During my time in prison, I threw myself into every opportunity to learn and develop. Through education, reading, self-reflection and becoming a peer mentor, I began rebuilding my confidence and discovering who I wanted to be. Supporting other women through some of the most difficult periods of their lives showed me the incredible impact that compassion, understanding and genuine human connection can have. It was also where I discovered my passion for advocating for survivors of domestic abuse and supporting people living with mental health challenges and substance misuse. I saw first hand how trauma can shape people’s lives, and how the right support can help them build a different future.

Joining Unlock My Life felt like a natural continuation of my own journey. I know what it feels like to believe your past defines you, and I also know how transformative it can be when someone believes in your potential.
